Ford Radiator Shutters 101

The shutter assembly in your Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicle, also known as an active grille shutter or "AGS," is a mechanism, controlled by an electronic actuator, that opens and closes to regulate airflow around the radiator. When open, it enables air to flow more freely, reducing air resistance (drag) and smoothing out the ride. When closed, it can do everything from help the engine and cabin warm up more easily to make things like defrosting the windshield happen faster. An AGS can even cut down on noise, all the while protecting mechanicals from dirt, rocks, bugs, and other road hazards.

Why Radiator Shutters Fail

For one, because of being repeatedly exposed to bad weather -- ice and snow and the like. Secondly, because of corrosion over time, from everything from moisture to road salt.

Signs of Bad Radiator Shutters

You'll know an AGS malfunction from things like dashboard warning lights and the shutters automatically disabling. In either case, inspect them, and if you find them faulty, replace them. The job might run you a few hundred dollars. You can save money going DIY, with the right skillset; just be sure to follow any directions in your owner's manual or other manufacturer's documentation closely.
