A roof rack can go by many names -- among them, luggage rack, roof carrier, or roof rail system. In use-specific cases, you might even hear one referred to as a kayak rack, bike rack, or ski and snowmobile rack. What roof racks do is support and distribute the weight of the cargo you're hauling on your vehicle's roof.

Racks are generally made of one sturdy, load-bearing metal or another -- for instance, steel or aluminum. What's more, where the term "roof rack" refers to the bars or rails that run parallel to the car roof, nearly its entire length, acting as basic supports and providing tie-down points for anchoring things, "crossbars" (accessories for roof racks) are rails running perpendicular, whose job is to evenly distribute that weight. Sometimes, the term "roof rack" can even stand in for "roof carrier," meaning, a platform or cargo box that can transport outdoor equipment, for example.
