Ford Parking Brake Cables 101

A parking brake is a mechanical failsafe that mainly helps keep a vehicle from rolling when it's parked. What a parking brake cable is, is a steel connection, either to a lever between your front seats or a pedal in your driver's-side footwell. What the cable does is apply tension -- namely, to two other cables leading to the rear wheels, usually. In doing so, it helps the brake shoes or brake pads your ride's got work (when you're not otherwise stepping on the brake pedal).

Signs a Parking Brake Cable Needs Replacement

The most obvious are fraying, cracks, and breakage. Others include the emergency brake getting stuck (because of water and road salt having rusted the tubes through which the cable runs), the parking brake feeling loose, stiffer than usual or wobbly, getting harder to set, or stopping working entirely, and the car leaning when the parking brake's set. You may also notice a warning light on the dashboard, and your wheels might have trouble turning.

The Cost of Changing a Parking Brake Cable, on Average

You might be looking at paying between $365 and $400 or so, according to recent RepairPal data. Cost can vary by make and model, too. Ford F-150 parking brake cable replacement, for example, may run $445 to $470; Lincoln MKZ parking brake cable replacement, $220 to $260; Mercury Mariner parking brake cable replacement, anywhere from $295 to $330, and so on.
