What Are Brake Pads and How Do They Work?

Brake pads are an essential component of your car’s braking system. They are steel-backing plates attached to your disc brake rotor and help decelerate your vehicle. Brake pads contact and apply pressure and friction to braking rotors, allowing your vehicle to safely slow down.

Brake pads are used thousands and thousands of times and eventually wear out. They absorb friction heat and energy and end up slowly becoming thinner and thinner.

What Are Brake Pads Made Of?

Brake pads are either made up of semi-metallic, organic, or ceramic materials.

Semi-metallic brakes are compiled from cooper, steel, and graphite metal shavings. Heavy-duty trucks typically use them because they need to accommodate for increased force. This economical option lasts a long time, but may start to wear out other components of your braking system. They are also ideal for warmer climates.

Organic brake pads utilize non-metallic parts, including rubber and Kevlar. They are softer than their metallic counterparts and operate great under high temperatures. They are quieter than metallic brakes but need to be replaced sooner. We recommend them for light-weight vehicles.

Finally, ceramic brake pads are bonded from ceramic and cooper fibers. They are the most expensive option and are typically only used for racing vehicles. These brake pads need to be replaced frequently.

When Do I need to Replace My Ford Brake Pads?

Brakes pads will slowly become thinner and thinner as you continue to use them. Auto Repair shops can test if it’s time for new brakes by placing a small piece of soft metal in the brake pad. If the metal rubs against the brake rotor, it’s time for new pads. You may also hear a squeaking and squealing noise when you brake.

It’s crucial to replace brake pads when they are worn out, because they will hinder the performance of your vehicle. If a car suddenly stops in front of you, your old pads may not have the capacity to prevent a collision.
