There are several signs that your fuel cap is going bad. If your gas cap won't tighten completely, water, dust, or dirt can get into your fuel and affect performance. Even worse, the fuel vapor that escapes can create a fire hazard if exposed to any sparks or ignition sources. A lit "Check Engine" dash light is also a common indicator of fuel cap trouble, but you'll need to connect a code reader to determine the true case of the alert since it's a generic warning for many issues.

Of course. Some just twist right off, while others have a leash that needs unwinding before removal. Just twist the new gas cap in a clockwise motion until you hear a clicking noise or the cap stops turning.
