Ford Shift Knobs 101

The shift knob in your vehicle is part of its transmission, basically. It's got two jobs -- to give you a better grip on the gear shift than a bare lever, and to show you the right pattern to follow when you change gears. One can be made of everything from plastic or brushed metal or chrome to carbon fiber and more, and it can come in one of many different styles and designs: accommodating a cover or wrap made of sheepskin, neoprene, vinyl, leather, and more, for instance; weighted, to reduce shift time and effort, and so on.

When to Replace a Shift Knob

Do so when it's faded, worn out, or broken; in such cases, there's no fixing it. The average cost isn't too bad -- sometimes, tens of dollars; occasionally, no more than a few hundred -- but it can vary widely, by everything from type to the make and model you drive.

How to Change a Shift Knob DIY

This depends on what your owner's manual says to do; check it for specifics. Also, know your old shift knob's thread diameter before even buying a replacement, let alone starting the job -- that way, you'll end up with one that fits. (For best results, go with an OEM replacement.) Otherwise, the process is usually as easy as putting on the emergency brake, putting the car in neutral, taking the old knob off (either by unscrewing it manually, counterclockwise, or using a wrench), and screwing the new knob on directly (or fitting it using any adapter required). If you're not sure what to do, a Ford dealer can help.
